Physician Biography

A native of Switzerland, Dr. Ali Dodge-Khatami completed his premedical studies at the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) and earned his medical degree from the University of Geneva (Switzerland). In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Dodge-Khatami earned his PhD degree from the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands). He completed his general surgery residency at the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genevè (HUG) in Geneva and at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) in Lausanne, Switzerland. His cardiovascular surgery training included three years at the CHUV and two years at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. For congenital heart surgery training and research, Dr. Dodge-Khatami spent 15 months at Children’s Memorial Hospital (currently Lurie Children’s) in Chicago, and a year as Senior Registrar at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, UK.

Board certified in cardiovascular surgery and congenital heart surgery, Dr. Dodge-Khatami focuses on primary repair/palliation of complex neonatal defects (arterial switch, truncus arteriosus, interrupted aortic arch and Norwood operations), as well as on the minimally invasive cosmetic right axillary approach for complete repair of ventricular and atrial septal defects, partial anomalous pulmonary veins and partial AV (atrioventricular) canal.

Dr. Dodge-Khatami believes it is a true privilege to be entrusted by parents with their most precious gift: their children. Day in and day out, his mission is to provide the best possible care and enhance the quality of life of children with heart defects.

He serves as director of pediatric heart surgery and professor in the division of pediatric and congenital heart surgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Before joining the Children’s Heart Center at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, Dr. Dodge-Khatami was director of neonatal cardiac surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He has served as Professor of Surgery at the University of Mississippi and the University of Hamburg (Germany) since 2012.

Dr. Dodge-Khatami has published extensively on topics related to cardiovascular conditions, treatments and surgery for both children and adults. He serves on the editorial boards of The World Journal of Pediatric & Congenital Heart Surgery, Pediatric Cardiology and Translational Pediatrics and is a reviewer for several other professional journals. He has also been invited to participate in symposia and grand rounds in the United States, Europe and the Middle East.

Dr. Dodge-Khatami’s professional memberships include the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society, European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Southern Thoracic Surgery Association and World Society for Congenital and Pediatric Heart Surgery.

Dr. Dodge-Khatami is fluent in English, French and German and proficient in Persian, Dutch and Spanish. He and his wife are proud parents of a young daughter.   Away from his practice, Dr. Dodge-Khatami enjoys skiing, scuba diving, tennis and cooking.  He is a frequent participant in humanitarian missions for the development of pediatric and congenital heart surgery in such wide-ranging areas as Russia, Macedonia, Vietnam, Honduras, Kenya, Ukraine and Libya.
