Physician Biography

Sudhakar Selvaraj, MD, earned his medical degree, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), at Government Kilpauk Medical College (GKMC) and the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in Chennai, India. He then completed clinical psychiatry residency training at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom (UK) and at Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry in London. He studied the role of serotonin transporters in major depressive disorders for his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) under the supervision of Professor P.J. Cowen at the University of Oxford.

Dr. Selvaraj believes in providing a patient-centered and holistic approach to care focused on a biopsychosocial model of treatment and functional recovery. He has broad experience in clinical psychiatry with a specific interest in treating and managing patients with mood disorders such as depression, postpartum depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders. He has specific training and expertise in psychopharmacology and brain imaging. Additionally, Dr. Selvaraj treats attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), psychosis and schizophrenia. He cares for patients 18 to 70 years of age, living in Houston and surrounding areas.

Dr. Selvaraj serves as an assistant professor and the Director of the Depression Research Lab in the department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. His research has primarily focused on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the mood disorders to develop biomarkers and better treatments. Dr. Selvaraj’s research has been published in a number of cited journals, including American Journal of Psychiatry, Molecular Psychiatry and Biological Psychiatry. He is also the director of the UTHealth Student Counseling Center, which provides mental health services to UTHealth students.

Throughout his career, Dr. Selvaraj has received numerous awards and honors. Most recently, he was recognized with the International Society of Serotonin Research’s (ISSR) NIDA Travel Award, the International Society for CNS Clinical Trials and Methodology’s (ISCTM) New Investigator Award, UTHealth’s 2016 Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award, the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology’s (ECNP) Fellowship Award and poster prize, and the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology’s (ASCP) Fellowship Award. In addition, he is a member of the Texas Medical Association (TMA), the Harris County Medical Society (HCMS), the Houston Academy of Medicine (HAM), the ASCP, the Society of Biological Psychiatry (SOBP), and the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London.
