Physician Biography

Dr. Haris Kamal received his medical degree from Yerevan State Medical University in Yerevan, Armenia. Subsequently, he completed a year of medical internship at a state hospital in New Delhi, India. Dr. Kamal then completed his internal medicine internship and neurology residency with State University of New York’s (SUNY) University of Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the Buffalo General Medical Center, where he served as chief resident and was inducted to the Gold Honor Humanism Society. He pursued further training, finishing his vascular neurology fellowship at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston.

Board certified in neurology, Dr. Kamal specializes in acute and chronic management of patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. He also treats patients with common neurological conditions, including seizures, memory disorders and neuromuscular conditions. He treats patients ages 18 and older and speaks Armenian, Hindi and Urdu. Patients enjoy Dr. Kamal’s compassionate and individualized approach to care. It is important to Dr. Kamal to take time to explain any complicated medical information and respond to patient requests or questions.

Dr. Kamal is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at McGovern Medical School and is the stroke director and chief of neurology at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital in Houston. Besides being involved in teaching residents, students and fellows, Dr. Kamal performs clinical research in cerebrovascular disease and has authored multiple abstracts, publications and book chapters, which have been presented at national and international conferences.

Throughout his training and career, Dr. Kamal has been honored with numerous recognitions. Two years in a row, he received the Michael E. Cohen Resident Research Award for Best Research Project at SUNY Buffalo. In addition, he was awarded SUNY Buffalo’s Edward Fogan Resident Award for Highest Standards of Neurological Practice and Compassionate Care, the American Academy of Neurology Fellow Travel Award, the American Society of Neuroimaging Resident Travel Award and the McGovern Medical School Fellowship Teaching Award.

In his free time, Dr. Kamal enjoys hiking, trekking and reading biographies.
